BOGOTÁ, Colombia, 20 September 2024 – Colombia is positioning itself as a frontrunner in Latin America's shift toward sustainable bioplastics production. To this end Colombia launched a Bioplastics Cluster with backing from the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation (MinCiencias) and the EU-funded Circular Plastics Program of the Americas (CPAP).
The Bioplastics Cluster will contribute to Colombia’s Bioeconomy Mission, a national strategy aiming to develop more than 500 high-value bioproducts by 2030. The initiative brings together private sector companies, public institutions, and academic expertise to drive the adoption of bioplastics as a replacement for conventional plastics. This effort aligns with Colombia’s Law 2232 of 2022, which promotes a gradual reduction of single-use plastics in the country, reflecting Colombia's commitment to sustainability and the circular economy.
To facilitate this transition, Reciend, a leading distributor of industrial chemicals with a focus on sustainable materials, joined forces with TotalEnergies Corbion, to showcase Luminy® PLA bioplastics at Colombiaplast 2024. Luminy® PLA bioplastics is a low-carbon, recyclable and industrially compostable alternative to conventional plastics. The collaboration with Reciend is aimed at distributing Luminy® PLA bioplastics throughout Colombia, helping industries transition to eco-friendly solutions and supporting the country’s sustainability goals.
During Colombiaplast 2024, on September 26, from 3:00 PM to 3:45 PM in Room 6 at Corferias, Joe Jankowski, Business Development Manager at TotalEnergies Corbion will present valuable insights into how bioplastics can reduce carbon footprints and promote the circular economy across various industries.
Joe Jankwoski, Business Development Manager of TotalEnergies Corbion, expressed the importance of this transition: "The opportunity to support the shift from fossil-based plastics to bioplastics enables our customers to reduce their carbon footprint and contribute to ending plastic pollution."
TotalEnergies Corbion will showcase their products at Booth 807E, Hall 11-16 in Bogota International Business and Exhibitions Center, demonstrating the impact of their sustainable solutions on global environmental challenges. Aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 17 on partnerships for the goals, the commitment of TotalEnergies Corbion and Reciend fosters innovation by driving the adoption of bioplastics in Colombia to meet global climate and pollution targets.
